How To Become A Good Drummer by Tom

Step 1: Find a good space for your drum set

You drum career starts with finding a good space for your drum set. Of course you can also use drum samples for free for your drum computer For a normal drum kit you need a space of about 1.5 meters by 1.5 meters. It is useful to put your drum set close to a wall because this way you can use the space well, while the sound is simultaneously reduced. A good area is important if you want to properly play the drums.

Step 2: Find a good drum set

Once you’ve found where you can place your drum kit, it is time to find a drum kit. You need to think carefully beforehand what you all want to do with it. If you want to use your drum set just to play loud and jam away, I would recommend an acoustic drum set. At the other hand, if you want to use your drum kit to accompany a choir, it is better to buy an electric drum kit. The difference lies in the fact that an electronic drum kit’s volume is adjustable.

Once you have determined what type of drum set you want, then you should consider how much money you want to spend on it. On average, a solid electronic drum set is a lot more expensive than an acoustic drum set: you can get a solid electronic drum kit from about 1500 euros, but you already have an acoustic for about 600 euros. It is of course also an option to look for a second-hand. There are plenty of new and second hand drum kits for sale on the Internet, and I advise you to take your time searching for a good deal

Step 3: The right accessories for your drumset

Buy the right accessories for your drum set. Ensure good cymbals, Paiste and Ziljdjian cymbals are well-known brands. The nice thing is that they usually don’t lose their value, so you can buy expensive ones if you have the means. It is also important that you buy good sheets for your drum kits, and that you tune your drums well.

Step 4: Take drum lessons

Take drum lessons. I advise you to take drum lessons on a regular basis, e.g. once a week or every two weeks should. The advantage of drum lessons with respect to teaching yourself is that you have a drum teacher who really knows what he’s talking about, and you can point out where you want to go. In addition, he can teach you things you would not learn by yourself. In addition, a drum teacher also can help you to keep being motivated. My preference was always given to private lessons because the teacher then focuses all his attention on you and your drum skills, and this comes in handy.

A disadvantage of drum lessons and certainly private lessons are the costs attached to it. It is also possible to learn books using drum books and DVDs that you can order online. But please note: technique is the most important thing in drumming. If you put too less effort in in the beginning, you might teach yourself a wrong technique, with the result that you will need loads of time later to adjust it.

Step 5: Find a drum band

Find a band. It is very nice to play in a band and also keeps you motivated to keep practicing. Perhaps the teacher knows a band in the drum school where you can play drums with. Of course you can also ask around or look on the internet for vacancies in drums bands. However, make sure you honestly mention beforehand what your level of drumming skills is. Otherwise, you might get stuck in very awkward situations and you really want to avoid that.

Step 6: Keep practicing

Learning to play the drums is not easy. In fact, it takes a lot of time. Especially learning the basics of drumming is hard, because you need to take multiple actions at the same time. But don’t give up! As soon as you have mastered some basic rhythms and you can use your left foot and both hands slightly independent from each other, it will get much easier to learn more and more and you will have great fun!

One way to keep motivated when you’re struggling to learning to play the drums is to listen some of your favourite songs and focus on the rhythm and the drums. You can then ask your teacher if he can teach you how to play those drums or at least how you can play along with it. This way, you will have way les effort to keep practicing hard!!

Good luck!!
